Factory immobilisers
Every modern car has one. It links the key to the vehicle electronically, so the engine will not start without the correct key present. That was a genuine step forward — but it makes the key the single point of failure.
Why keyless cars are targeted
Keyless entry systems are designed to work when the key is nearby. If the vehicle can be convinced the key is nearby when it is not, the factory immobiliser is satisfied. This is why theft of many modern vehicles is quiet, quick and causes no visible damage.
We will not go further than that in public. What matters to owners is the conclusion: relying on the factory system alone is no longer enough for frequently targeted models.
What an aftermarket immobiliser adds
An additional immobiliser introduces a separate authorisation step, independent of the key, that the driver performs. Without it the vehicle will not drive away — even if entry is gained and the factory system is satisfied.
For the owner it takes seconds and becomes habitual. For anyone else it is an unknown obstacle at the exact moment they need speed.
Trackers are not the same thing
A tracker reports a vehicle after it has been taken. An immobiliser is intended to stop it being taken at all. They complement each other; they do not replace each other.
